I have been working with Emma Purshouse on the theme of the Essex Skipper, which is a small and scare butterfly who has traveled up the M1 Corridor from Essex to the Midlands.
When Emma and I began discussing this theme, the journey the butterfly had made and also some of it's key characteristics, I was reminded of my own identity and life journey.
Like the Essex Skipper, I too originated in Essex and enjoyed socialising surrounded by the 'Essex Girl' stereotypes, and I guess I too have been the butt of many a joke.
Like the butterfly I have moved away from this stereotype trying to avoid all 'the dumb butterfly jokes' and the label of 'Essex Girl' but always have Essex in my heart, and still enjoy socialising in the homeland when the opportunity arises.
Like the Essex Skipper I am small and sociable - I journeyed up the M1 corridor too and settled in 1999 in the Midlands, which has also become my home.
In this piece of work I have compared my own life journey and identity with that of the Essex Skipper, I really enjoyed working with Emma on this piece and exchanging many hours worth of classic Essex jokes in the process.
My work is an interactive piece and I hope that people will come along and participate by making their own version of the Essex Skipper personal to them using the worksheets I have produced.

When visiting Wren's Nest I was struck by the layers or rock, each of which depicted to me evidence of a layer of history and what had been left behind from times gone by.
These layers were like pages in a book that overlayed each other and collectively told the story of Wren's Nest through the rocks, which were inprinted with evidence of passed times.
My artwork interprets these rocks and fascinating surfaces as a small book that like the rocks is layered and patterned telling a story, which is open to the viewer's own interpretation.
Jane Seabourne and I talked through ideas together and our thoughts and feelings about Wren's Nest. We both loved the idea of the rocks telling a story and also the layers of rocks looking visually like books but also being keepers of history. We started to think about our work as a guide to our interpretations of Wren's Nest - and both being small of stature thought about a pocket guide book and well the poetry and art just grew from there, with plenty of coffee and conversations.
