My current work is a result of studying geological features and ancient fossils. I have attempted to create strong, raw natural forms, which have a level of spontaneity found in nature.
Emma’s Purshouse’s poem ‘The man who wants to make himself a fossil’ has influenced the use of the fossil motif found within the series. I was intrigued by the idea of producing my own fossils, creating details within my work, which suggest extinct life forms.
These details are also a link to my previous sculptural work, which is currently being exhibited to accompany Nick Pearson’s poem ‘Interview with a Trilobite’.
The work for this exhibition came about as a result of studying insect forms. Repetition, pattern and a sense of movement are all important aspects of each piece. My intention is not to create a replica of a specific insect, but to select certain suggestive characteristics, which are recognisable to the viewer.
The colours used within my work reflect my interest in contemporary street and skateboard graphics. Each piece is numbered as if it were part of a military arsenal. This was a fleeting reference to how insects can often appear on mass as if deployed as a small army.
This work was inspiration for the poem 'Kafka's Father' by Emma Purshouse.
