John Hampton

My painting practice generally develops through a series of works which explore a variety of avenues around a specific theme.

A current theme is that of Gardens as a timeless human construct and a place of human presence, activity and contemplation.

'Pause' Oil on canvas. ‘Pause’ is about that brief moment of stillness when time seems to stop. We pause from projecting our goals into the world, and the complexity of noise, movement, pressure, actions, movement, dimensions, all seem distantly detached.
The pale colours of the elements and the banding, suggest rest, but as you observe, the noises lurking behind the surface begin to emerge.

Emma Purshouse has responded to this piece in her poem entitled ‘Explore the Peace and Quiet of an Unspoilt Silurian Seascape’

The Great Dustbinian Formation work relates to Jane Seabourne’s poem of the same name, and conversations about time. A collection of detritus and human throw away rubbish which reflects a section of our period.

The work on show, is a series of assemblages/constructions which are a response to Emma Purshouse’s poem 'That Day'. This has given me the exciting opportunity to explore the theme of detachment and the emergence from the constraints which this can impose.
