You are now situated in the foreground up to your knees in
a warm tropical sea, a few million years BC (in the region
of four hundred and forty three). Take a few steps forward;
moving away from the exhibition space and fixing your face
firmly in the direction of the Silurian horizon. With each
pace background noise will disappear and the assault on
the ear by modern life will recede. One by one, planes,
traffic, the hum of human life are gone. Animals, birds,
insects, trees will desist. Cease to exist. Take a deep
breath and relax. Enjoy the nano second of complete and
total calm. Do not panic as your sense of place and being
is lost. Ignore any deterioration of mental health as you
find you can no longer orientate yourself. Feelings of
nausea will pass as you adjust to the new acoustics that
have previously been masked. Become aware of the
bristling sun; the rippling water. Tune in to whispering
coral chains; the click click click of the bony fish (as they
evolve their moveable jaws); the ticking of trilobites on
stony ocean floors; the snicker-snack of sea scorpions, ten
feet long with claws; the teeth-squealing slow slide of
tectonic plates; ear-splitting cracks as continents collide;
roiling, boiling magma snapping at the earth’s crust; the
upward thrust of mountain sides; a symphony of thunder
claps; the deafening splash of an ice-cap collapse; the
bone-shattering vibration of the world spinning round; the
mind-numbing cacophony of previously unheard sound.
Welcome to Silurian delirium. In the event of screaming
(which will be your own). Please follow the guide to make
your way out through the back of the canvas. Your shaking
will eventually subside. The management accept no
responsibility for longer lasting effects such as post-
traumatic stress, inferiority complex, or intermittent bouts of
fainting. Please continue to enjoy the painting.
